I celebrated a volleyball friend’s 40th birthday party last weekend (Happy Birthday Stu – you don’t look 40 at all!).
He held an early Halloween party, so I had to find a costume to wear. I’m not real big into costumes and to be honest, I don’t think I ever was. The last costume I wore was a House costume. I spent no money on it because I had everything I needed in my closet.
This year…I just thought…let’s do something different. I don’t know why but it just felt right.
As per usual, I procrastinated until the day of, so a couple of hours before the party I found myself wandering Target. The selection was slim, but I did score an adult-size Harry Potter robe. It didn’t have the colorful stripe tie unfortunately.
Nonetheless, I thought…hey I liked Harry Potter as a kid. I had the white shirt and black slacks. All I needed was just a tie…so I just decided to wear a black one that I had at home.
Once I purchased the robe, I felt kind of excited. Time to expelli-y’all-mus some people tonight.
Got to the party…was one of the first ones there (which is usually not the case haha). I caught up with people that I hadn’t seen in the past year. Most of the people I knew were from the Tucson volleyball community.
It was fun guessing what people were dressed up as.
Stu and Mariana – you guys are awesome! Always going all out on the parties. Thanks for inviting me! Hope to party with yall again soon 🙂
We don’t stop playing because we grow old
The night reminded me of that George Bernard Shaw quote about growing old:
“We don’t stop playing because we grow old; we grow old because we stop playing.”
I’ve been trying to lean more into that play mindset (kind of like that childlike mentality) no matter where I am – whether I’m at work or just hanging out with friends.
I would tattoo that on my arm – “You get old when you stop playing.”
I know that not everything is going to be fun, but if I can keep on playing in life…then that’s good.
